A Mirror And A Movie...

First off, let me say I'm obsessed with finding stuff on Craigslist..

Please tell me I'm not the only one.

Please tell me that you also spend hours shuffling through millions hundreds of pictures searching for the perfect hutch/buffet/table/dresser to make over for fun to furnish your home.

To be honest, I don't just look for myself but I also look for my family too. I like the idea of finding something old and transforming it to fit my home and decorating tastes.  Not to mention, that I always feel better about the environment re-purposing old furniture. But I digress.

So one day, I was stalking  reading some of my favorite blogs one day and I ran across this post at You Are Talking Too Much about a mirror makeover and one of my favorite Disney movies, Beauty and the Beast. Um, hello?? She had me at Disney.

Rebecca observed that her mirror reminded her of this character from the movie.

I was instantly smitten.

I mean who wouldn't be??  Doesn't every girl dream of finding an enchanted castle with her Prince inside? (Am I the only one? Really? I guess it's just me.) AND it satisfies my current obsession with chalkboards, I am a teacher by profession after all.

So I decided that I HAD to have my own.

Low and behold, I found this beauty (get it? Beauty?) on Craigslist a few days later.

(look closely..Rosalie and Esme are totally photobombing my photo-shoot)

I snapped her up the next day before someone else got the same idea.

Now before you ask, she was listed for $45 but I was able to talk the seller down to $35.  I thought that was a pretty good deal.  Don't you? (Although, Rebecca got a much better deal.)

I got out my trusty Annie Sloan Chalk Paint otherwise known to most people in the blog world as the holy grail of chalk paint.  Seriously, this stuff is worth every penny!

I slapped painted on two coats of Old White and she looked like this.

(Sorry for the bad lighting cell phone shot.)

Now that it's painted white it reminds even more of the "Chest of Drawers" from the movie.

Unlike Rebecca, I decided not to paint the mirror.  Not wanting to ruin a perfectly good mirror, I purchased some chalkboard contact paper.

This way if I ever get tired of the chalkboard I can return it back to a mirror. Genius, right?

I also decided that the top was looking a little boring so I decided to jazz it up!  I added Annie Sloan French Linen around the center piece and Annie Sloan Old Ocher in the scroll work. But it was still missing something then I thought......and thought......and thought.

Finally, I realized it needed a mermaid!!!

So I got to drawing...

Once I got it drawn, I went old school MacGyver and penciled the back. This allowed me to use it as a stencil.

Then I traced it through the the paper, so I got this. (I know you are in awe of my mad skills.)

Then I painted her in!

TA-DA! And there she is, I think that she turned out great! And now you can also see the details of the top with the added color. Fabulous!

Mermaids are the new Seahorses, don't you think?

I would love for you to comment below and tell me what you think...
